Chapter 19: Bait
I sat down on my bedroom floor next to the empty shoebox.
Ciro crouched in the doorway and didn't touch anything.
"Nothing else is gone," he said. "Your TV. Lexie's jewelry. The tip money's on the counter."
"They knew what they wanted."
"They knew where it was."
That was the part that made my skin go cold.
I'd told one person where those sheets were.
At one in the morning, on an orange plastic chair.
Ciro saw me work it out.
"Who did you tell?" he said quietly.
"You didn't know where they were."
"No."
"Cillian did."
Ciro stood up. His face went very still.
"Don't," I said.
"Trixie."
"He sat on the hospital floor last night. He didn't do this."
"Then somebody he talks to did."
I thought about the waiting room.
The vending machines. The shaved head. The phone going back in a pocket. The elevator.
I didn't say it.
