Chapter 21: Second Carat
Lexie read the message twice over my shoulder.
"I'll bring the thieves," she said. "He means us."
"He means us in masks, crying, in front of everybody we've ever served a drink to."
"I've never served anybody a drink."
"You've done their nails. It's worse. You know their secrets."
The two bosses stood up from the bench, already on their phones.
I looked past them down the boardwalk, at our building.
The fudge shop. The palm reader. The plywood in the middle.
"Lex," I said. "When he stands up in September and calls us thieves, what do you want to be?"
She followed my eyes to the plywood.
"Business owners," she said slowly.
"With a license on the wall."
"In a frame."
"A gold frame."
"Plated," she said, and we both laughed so loud the bosses turned around.
We signed the lease on the taffy shop that Friday.
We paid with what was left of my shoebox money, my summer tips and Lexie's nail clients.
They'd been coming up our stairs for manicures since June.
