Chapter 24: Sleight of Hand
Rino dropped the keys into his shirt pocket and patted them.
"Ladies," he said. "You're in early."
My hand was still on the book inside the safe.
I took it off, slowly.
"Collecting cups," I said.
"From inside my safe?"
"Somebody left a ring on it. I was going to wipe it."
He laughed, the big warm one, and it bounced off the steel walls and came back wrong.
He came down the room between the covered money machines.
He wasn't in a hurry.
The light caught a gold ring on his little finger.
A flat gold signet with a V cut into it, the same V as the cufflink in my jewelry box.
"My guard buzzed me the second you went in," he said. "He's a good boy. He doesn't chew gum."
"He's a good boy who'll testify you walked in and locked us in a room," Lexie said.
"He'll testify I walked in and caught two thieves with their hands in the family safe."
He stopped by the long table, three steps from us.
"The book, sweetheart."
I didn't move.
Lexie moved.
She walked right up to the counting table in her pinned-together vest and put both her hands flat on it.
