Chapter 20: Christmas Eve

The Kostka ballroom held four hundred people on Christmas Eve, and every one of them was in a good coat.

I stood at the side door in a black dress, with my mother's hand in mine.

Rosalie wore a navy dress she had bought that week.

Her glasses hung from her neck, and she held herself very straight.

"Are you sure?" I asked her.

"No," my mother said. "Let's go in."

We walked in together.

The room was all candles and evergreen and long white tables.

The church women from Polish Hill sat near the front, in a row.

The foundation board filled two tables on the left, with their programs open in front of them.

At the head table, in black wool and pearls, sat Halina Kostka with her cane across her knee.

She saw me, and she saw who I had brought.

Her face did not change.

Leo was at the microphone on the little stage, with a glass of water at his elbow, welcoming the families.

He said it was a night for giving.

He said the foundation had given four hundred coats this year.

Then he looked across the room and found my eyes.

"I'd like to pass this to someone who has something to say," Leo said. "Siobhan Calloran."
