Chapter 15: Ten Minutes
Dean's text came at 9:02 on Saturday morning, while I was standing in Will's kitchen eating cold garlic noodles out of the pot.
Ten minutes. End of Mom's driveway. You pick the terms.
I read it twice and thought about it for one noodle.
Then I wrote back: Car. Window down six inches. Engine on.
He answered in under a minute.
Yes.
Patty's driveway was a long strip of cracked concrete between two boxwoods that had been trimmed to the same height since 1991.
I pulled in at the bottom and left the engine running.
Dean was already there.
He stood at the mailbox on his crutches in a gray wool coat, with his best friend's truck idling at the curb behind him and a manila folder pinned under one arm.
I lowered the window six inches.
The cold came in through the gap.
He bent, which cost him, and I watched it cost him.
"Thanks for coming," he said.
"You have ten minutes. I'm not setting a timer."
"Okay."
"Is that a folder?"
"Yes. I'll hold it up and you can read it from there. I'm not handing you anything."
He held up the first page against the glass.
It was a letter from St. Vincent's Patient Financial Services.
Paid in full.
The amount was $61,204.18.
"I cashed out my 401(k) on Monday," he said. "The penalty and the tax took about a third. They got the wire Friday morning. What's left is nineteen thousand dollars, which is what I have."
I didn't say anything.
I looked at the number on the page, and then at his crutches.
