Chapter 21: Her Face, Her Coat

Millicent's POV

At four o'clock the light on Marlborough Street was going yellow, and Lawrence and Leona were still on the steps.

He stood on the walk with his hands in his coat pockets.

She sat on the top step with her suitcase beside her, in the white coat, shivering.

I stopped at the gate under the realtor's sign.

He didn't turn around. He had heard my boots.

"She's been here since noon," he said. "I told her she can't come in."

"It's cold," Leona said. Her teeth were chattering. "I only want to sit down."

"You can sit there."

"Lawrence, I have nothing."

"You had two million dollars."

"It's gone."

"Where?"

"A man in Phoenix," she said. "Then a boat. Then another man. It doesn't matter." She lifted her chin. "I only need enough to start again. Two hundred thousand. You've got six million coming from this house. I read it in the Ledger."

I almost laughed.

She had been in the city a week, and she already knew his bank balance.

"No," Lawrence said.

"I loved you."

"I know you did."

"I'd have come back for you the second I could."

"You signed a note that said you wouldn't." He kept his voice quiet. "I read your handwriting in my mother's drawer. You didn't hesitate. It's very neat."

Leona's face crumpled. It wasn't a performance. It was worse than that.

"She told me she'd ruin me," she said. "She said she'd have my sister's scholarship pulled and I'd be arrested for fraud."

"Did she?"

"No. She just said it. And I was twenty-one and scared, and then I had the money, and every month I was too ashamed to come back."
