Chapter 20: The Warden's Press Conference

"I am Warden Vernon Sallow," the voice on the lawn was saying, "and I stand before you with a heavy heart."

Sawyer came down the front steps of the administration building in prison orange with the sheriff on one side and Lorena on the other.

Nine reporters and three cameras were pointed at the lectern.

Behind Sallow hung the Ridge's blue banner, and in front of him lay a typed statement he held in both hands.

"A violent convict named Cole Maitland, working with the late Captain Hargis, incited a riot in C-block. A man died. Nobody is more grieved than I."

"Hargis isn't dead," a reporter called.

"A figure of speech. He is in custody, and the Ridge is cooperating."

Sawyer climbed onto the low platform beside the lectern.

Sallow's smile stayed on his face, but his eyes went round.

"Mr. Harlan," he said, so low the microphone barely caught it. "Please."

Sawyer took the microphone off its stand.

"My name is Sawyer Harlan," he said. "I own this building. Until an hour ago I was inmate Cole Maitland."

The cameras swung.

"Sir," a reporter began, and then stopped, because he had seen the sheriff's badge.
