Chapter 21: Laundry Day
Sawyer ran.
The camel coat flared ahead of him across the yard gravel, a silver head bobbing over it, and a man of fifty-eight ran.
Behind him the lawn erupted into shouting.
Ernest hit the laundry's side door with his shoulder and went through.
Sawyer was right behind him.
Inside, the noise swallowed everything.
Eight washers roared along one wall, and steam hung under the tin roof in white sheets.
Forty men in orange stood along the sixty-foot folding table, and not one of them looked up.
Ernest plunged between the presses toward the loading dock at the back.
Sawyer saw a black sedan idling beyond the dock's open frame, a guard in grey at the wheel.
Then the guard saw what was coming, and the sedan lurched off.
Ernest reached the dock door and stopped.
Across the bay, thirty men had stepped out from the folding table and stood shoulder to shoulder with their arms crossed.
Nobody spoke.
"Get out of my way," Ernest said, in his warm voice, a half step unsteady.
Nobody moved.
He turned, panting, and saw Sawyer walk out of the steam with his chest rising and falling.
"Nephew," Ernest said. "Let's be reasonable."
