Chapter 23: The Chair
The buses came on a Monday, twelve of them, white with the state seal on the doors.
They idled in a line outside the front gate with their engines running and their windows dark.
In the yard, the deputy commissioner of corrections stood on a plywood platform with a microphone, in a navy suit that did not suit the wind.
"Gentlemen," he said. "The Department has terminated its contract with Harlan Corrections. The facility will close."
A low sound went through C-block, two hundred and eighty men seated in the dirt for the last time.
"You will be transferred this morning in groups of fifty. Your property will follow. Your cases will be reviewed at the receiving facilities."
"Where?" someone called.
"Five states." The commissioner did not look up. "Most of you will not be together."
The sound grew.
It was not a roar.
It was the sound of men doing arithmetic about their mothers.
Sawyer came across the yard from the administration building.
He wore a plain grey shirt and work trousers, and he was carrying a heavy wooden chair.
