Chapter 7: Under the Tarp

"I'm not asking to see what's in it," Stefan said. "I'm asking to drive you there."

The car had stopped outside Jessamine's bakery, and she was already walking toward us with a tray of muffins in her hands and a hard look on her face.

"First National on Delancey," I said. "Jessamine comes in with me, and you wait in the car."

"Agreed."

"You agree to everything now."

"I agree to everything I can," he said. "It's a short list."

Jessamine climbed in beside me, put the muffins on her lap and looked at his driver's neck, then his hands, then his face.

"If you hurt her," she said, "I will put you in a pie."

"That seems fair."

The bank was marble and brass, with a line of eight people at the tellers.

I gave my name at the desk and slid across the key.

The clerk looked at the card and then up at me.

"Mrs. Kingsland," she said. "It's been a while."

Eight heads turned.

"Garrick," I said. "It's Ms. Garrick."

"Of course. I'm so sorry. I saw the news."

"I'd rather you didn't say that out loud."

A man in the line had his phone up.

"That's her," he told the woman beside him. "The Judas wife."

Jessamine turned around slowly and put a fresh, hot cheese muffin into his hand.

"Take it," she said. "Eat it. Put the phone away, or I'll put it somewhere you won't like."

He lowered the phone.

I swallowed a laugh and followed the clerk down a corridor to the vault.

The box was a flat steel drawer in a small room with a table and no window.

The clerk left us there.

I turned the key, and it slid out with a long metallic sound.

Inside there were only two things, and no tin.
