Chapter 13: Money Talks
The private bank on State Street had carpets so thick my shoes made no sound.
Benedict walked beside me in his charcoal coat, carrying nothing, because I had asked to carry the cigar box myself.
The banker met us at a glass door and shook my hand.
"Ms. Trowbridge. We have the certificates verified with the transfer agent."
"Good."
"There is one complication."
My stomach dropped and rose again.
"What kind?"
"At nine this morning, Ellingwood Holdings filed an adverse claim against all fourteen certificates."
He slid a letter across the table.
It was on thick cream paper with a lawyer's letterhead, and I knew the tone before I read a word.
"They say the shares were handed over in error," the banker said. "No consideration. No valid gift. They ask us to freeze the payout."
"How long would a freeze last?"
"Until a court decides. Months, possibly."
Two point one million dollars, sitting behind a pane of glass.
I put my hand flat on the box.
The door opened behind us before anyone could say more.
Camryn walked in without knocking.
