Chapter 11: The Dead King

The boathouse belonged to a fishing camp that had closed for the season.

The padlock came off with a rock.

Inside there was a cot, a wool blanket, a camp stove and a window that looked at nothing but black water.

I laid Bastian on the cot and stripped off the rest of his wet shirt.

He had a long body, pale and scarred, and I made myself look only at the wound.

I cleaned it, packed it with fresh gauze and bound it with a roll of tape from the kit.

"Where did you learn to do that?" he asked.

"Night shift. You'd be amazed what comes into a pharmacy at three in the morning."

"Tell me."

"A man with a fishhook in his thumb. A woman who wanted to know if she could take her dog's pills."

His mouth moved.

"Can she?"

"No."

I sat back on my heels.

Outside it had started to rain on the tin roof, a steady drumming that filled the whole room.

He was shivering.

I found the blanket and tucked it up to his chin, and he caught my wrist.

"Stay," he said.

"There's one cot."

"Then lie beside me."

"No bed. That was the third rule."

"It's a cot."

I should have laughed.

I took off my wet sweater, and my shoes, and lay down on my side with my back to the wall and the cold boards under me, because the cot was only wide enough for two if neither of us breathed.

His arm settled around my waist.

His hand rested low and flat on my stomach.

We lay there and listened to the rain.

"I can hear them," he said, very quietly. "All three. They're so fast."
