Chapter 7: Aunt Honoria's Tea

Merrick had Bastian off the floor and up the attic ladder before I finished pulling on my sweater.

"Not a sound," Merrick whispered. "Not a cough."

"She'll know I'm here," Bastian said. "She can smell me from the road."

"Not through the larches and the lake. Not while I'm standing in front of you."

The attic hatch dropped shut.

I stood alone in the hallway, with my hand on the rail, and drew one slow breath.

Then I went downstairs and opened the front door myself.

"Elspeth, darling!"

Honoria came up the porch steps in her camel coat and her gloves, with a wicker basket on her arm.

Her eyes were full of tears.

She dropped the basket on the bench and caught my face in both hands.

"Thank heaven. Thank heaven you're alive."

I let her hold me.

It was the hardest thing I had done all week.

"I've been out of my mind," she said. "I came the moment I could get away from Gerard."

"From Gerard," I repeated.

"He took advantage of Bastian's grief. He had the petition drawn up behind my back." She dabbed at her eyes with a gloved finger. "I would never have let it be filed. Never. You are family."

She had sat on my bed last week and watched me sign it.

It was a good performance.

I had watched it every night for a year.

"How did you find me?" I asked.

"This was my sister-in-law's lodge. Bastian's mother's. I thought, if the child were frightened, where would he take her?" She smiled. "I am only so sorry I'm late."
