Chapter 15: Read It Aloud

Linnea's POV

The chair on Garland's left was the only empty one on the dais, so I took it.

Nobody stopped me.

Four hundred wolves were watching, and the cold knot in my womb was turning over, and I kept my hands folded on the white cloth so they wouldn't shake.

Bram stood at the back of the hall by the door.

I didn't look at him again.

Garland came up the dais steps with his stick tapping, saw me in his chair, and smiled warmly.

"Linnea," he said. "How good of you to come. Sit, sit. You're pale."

"I'm sitting."

"Then let us begin." He lifted his hand, and the drum went quiet. "Friends, we are here under the treaty to hear a claim."

"Before you do," I said.

He stopped.

I stood up, slowly, with my hand on the table, and I heard the hall draw one breath.

"I'm the mother," I said. "I'd like the oath read out loud. The whole of it, in the words it was sworn in, so everybody in this room hears what was promised for my children."

The Greywater elders looked at each other.

Garland looked at me.

For one second I saw him weigh it.

Then he spread his hands and bowed, as gracious as ever.

"Of course. A mother's right." He nodded at the oldest man on the dais, who had a scroll case on his knee. "Read it, Elder."

I took the silence for what it was.

He thought he had already won.

The Elder unrolled the scroll with shaking fingers, and cleared his throat.

"I, Bram Wolcott, Alpha of Blackthorn, swear to Garland Ashdane, Alpha of Greywater," he read. "In return for the cure of a curse laid on my mate's womb, I give the first litter of that womb into the care of Greywater at birth. I give a cut of my blood at every full moon until the litter is born. This oath binds the first litter, so long as," and he stopped.
