Chapter 4: Close the Door

I closed the door.

Anson's office had a desk the size of a car and one lamp on, and he did not go behind the desk.

He stood in the middle of the floor with his hands in his pockets.

"Sit," he said.

"I'd rather stand."

"You say that a lot."

"I've had a lot of people tell me to sit while they decide what to do with me."

He took that in without blinking.

"Is that what you think this is?"

"I think you have been looking at me all day and not saying a word, and now you've shut me in a room." I kept my voice level. "I'd like to know which kind of boss you are before I find out the hard way."

"Which kinds are there?"

"The kind who apologizes for keeping a woman in a lobby for ninety minutes, and the kind who doesn't."

His eyes narrowed a fraction.

"I apologized."

"You apologized once you found out it was your chief of staff's doing. Before that you stood there and offered me Monday."

The room was very quiet.

I had not meant to say it.

It had been sitting in my chest all day, and now it was out.

Anson took one step toward me.

"You're right," he said.

I had not expected that.

"I was told the interview was rescheduled," he said. "I believed it, because I never question Meredith. In eleven years I have never had to. When I came down and saw you standing there with your folder, I knew in a second that I had been wrong, and I did not say so, because I was looking at you."

"Looking at me."

"I've been looking at you since ten o'clock this morning, Daphne." His voice stayed flat and exact. "I'm not good at hiding it. I wanted you to know that I noticed. I don't date people who work for me. I never have. I'm telling you so you know exactly what I am."
