Chapter 15: Still Recording
Gretchen dropped my phone on the dining room floor.
She stepped on it with her heel.
The screen cracked in a white star, and she ground it into the parquet until the red light went out.
Her hands were shaking.
"Thirty-six minutes," she said to her father. "You said all of that out loud."
"Thank you, darling," Gilbert said.
He folded his napkin and laid it by his plate.
He did not look worried.
He looked like a man who had watched a fly walk across a window and then seen it leave.
"That was a four-hundred-dollar phone," I said.
"I'll replace it. I'll replace the house, if you sign." He nodded at the folder. "You have no recording now, Claire."
"I heard you."
"Then it's your word against mine."
He smiled at me with great kindness.
"And I am the chairman of Holloway Group. I pay your father's lawyers and I sign the checks that keep his house. Who do you think the police believe?"
My heart was going so hard that I felt it in my teeth.
"I'm leaving," I said, and I stood up.
"Sit down."
It was the first time I had ever heard him say it without a please.
His hand shot out and closed around my wrist.
The old soft fingers were much stronger than they looked.
"Let go," I said.
"You will sign that page, Claire."
He pulled, and my hip hit the table, and the glasses rang.
I put my free hand over my stomach.
Gretchen stepped around the table and stood in front of the dining room door.
"Dad." Her voice cracked. "She's pregnant. Let her go home."
