Chapter 7: Four Terms

I answered him in front of two hundred phones.

"Yes," I said. "I went there to end it."

A sound went through the room, something between a gasp and a hiss.

Quentin did not move.

"I walked in sure," I said. "Then I saw her heartbeat on the screen, and I said wait. I walked out still pregnant."

My voice shook on the last word, and I made it finish anyway.

"That's the whole truth. Anybody who wants to print it can print all of it."

I picked up my chair, because I would not leave a chair on its side.

I set it upright, and I walked out of the ballroom with my back straight and my cardigan ribbon still on.

Behind me, nobody said a thing.

The garage under the club was cold concrete and fluorescent light.

I got as far as my car door before I heard his footsteps.

"Claire."

I turned around with my keys in my fist.

Quentin stopped ten feet away.

He looked like a man who had run up a flight of stairs and was only now learning how far he had to fall.

"Is it mine?" he asked.

I laughed.

It came out as an ugly sound, and it echoed off the concrete.

"Is it yours."

"I had to ask."

"No, you didn't." I stepped toward him. "You were my husband for six years. You know exactly who I've slept next to. You know that I never once looked at anyone else."

He flinched.

"Yes," I said. "It's yours. It's twelve weeks old, and it's yours, and you found out from an insurance form."
