Chapter 8: Forty Feet Up
Rafe stood in the study doorway with his hands open at his sides.
"She's been in here too long," he said.
"I didn't touch the light," I said.
"I know. You didn't have to."
Shelby did not even turn around.
She tucked the black ledger under her arm and smoothed the front of her dress.
"This was never yours," she told the room, and I could not tell which of us she meant.
Then she walked straight at Rafe.
He stepped aside to let her pass, and he did not touch her, and she did not look at him.
I heard her heels cross the hall, and the front door, and the iron gate.
I did not hear a car.
"Why did you come in?" I said, and I was shaking. "I asked you for one thing."
"She went through the gate. I watched her do it from the corner." His voice was quiet. "In sixteen years she never went through it, and I thought, she's finally going to hurt somebody."
"She was about to tell me what he did."
"She was about to tell you whatever she'd planned to tell you."
"You don't get to decide that."
His jaw moved.
"You're right," he said. "I don't."
He left, and I stood in my father's empty study and wanted to throw the green chair through the window.
The next morning I took the bus downtown.
The tower rose on the river side of the city, a gray skeleton of steel and concrete decks, fourteen floors so far.
A man in a yellow vest stopped me at the gate.
"I'm here for Rafe Kessel," I said.
"You his wife?"
"No."
"Then you're the reason he's been checking his phone all week." He looked at my face. "Hard hat's on the hook. The hoist is on your left."
The hoist was an open cage on a rail.
