Watching My Fake Sister Dig Her Own Grave novel · Chapter 14 of 32

Chapter 14: Bridgeport

Dez's mother found out on Sunday morning.

I know because she knocked on my door at nine with a casserole dish under a dish towel.

She was short and round and wore a Sox jacket over a church dress.

"You're the girl," she said.

"I'm the girl."

"He said you were thin. He didn't say you were this thin." She pushed the dish into my hands. "Coffee cake. Dinner's at four. Don't bring anything, and if you bring something, bring rolls."

I called Dez.

"Your mother was here."

"I told you," he said. "You'll never eat alone again."

The Coughlin house was a brick two-flat on a corner, with a plastic Santa on the porch that had lost its nose.

It had more people in it than the foundation.

Three sisters, all with Dez's green eyes and none of his patience.

Five nieces between four and twelve, who looked at my legs the second I came through the door.

The smallest one walked right up to me.

"Are those robot legs?"

"Kind of."

"Do they come off?"

"Want to see?"

Her whole face lit up.

I sat on the stairs and pressed the release.

Click.

Five nieces went silent.

I handed the leg to the twelve-year-old to hold.

"Careful. It cost as much as a car."

Dez's oldest sister leaned on the banister and watched me.

"He's been talking about you for six weeks," she said. "Six weeks. He doesn't talk about anything but the Sox."

"She's lying," Dez said from the kitchen.

"I'm the oldest," she told me. "I'm never lying."

Dinner was pot roast, mashed potatoes, a green bean thing with crunchy onions on top, and rolls I'd bought at a bakery on Halsted.

His mother pointed at the rolls and nodded at me once.

Twelve people around one table with two leaves in it and a card table at the end for the kids.
