Chapter 14: Setting the Table

On Thursday the practice owner called me from her car.

"I got an invitation to a baby party," she said. "It has your name on it and Lacey's name as host."

"I didn't send it."

"I didn't think you did." She waited. "Your friend emailed me a file last week. I never opened it. I deleted it, and I told her not to write to me again."

"Thank you."

"Tell me what you need."

"Come on Saturday," I said. "Bring the hygienists. Sit near the front."

"We'll be there at two."

"One more thing. Bring your phones."

She was quiet for a second, and then she laughed once.

"Oh, I like where this is going," she said.

On Friday afternoon, Lacey came to walk the yard.

She wore a camel coat and a silk scarf, and her hair was curled and perfect.

A man in a rental company shirt followed her, rolling a huge LED screen on a cart.

"Mar!" She opened her arms. "I'm so glad you're not mad."

I let her hug me.

She smelled like the shampoo I had bought for the guest room.

"I'm not mad," I said.

"I knew you'd come around. You always do." She stepped back and squeezed my arms. "I'm doing a little slideshow for the toast. Pictures of the shower, your bump, Tilly's first day. Everybody cries."

"Whose pictures?"

"I found them in the shared cloud." She smiled. "Don't worry, I picked the cute ones."

Greg stood on the porch with Tilly in the carrier on his chest.

She looked at him.

It was the first time she had looked at her brother in six weeks.

"Hi, Greg," she said brightly.

"Lace."

"Come to the party. I'd love for you to be there."

"I'll be in the yard," he said.

"Good." Her smile did not move. "Then I'll only need ten minutes tomorrow, and I'll be out of everyone's life."
