Chapter 5: Live

Garner's hand dropped from my arm.

Greg did not touch him.

He only stood on the step below us until Garner took a step back.

The little number on Lacey's screen said twenty-six people were watching.

I looked at it.

Then I looked straight into her camera.

"Hi," I said. "My name is Kira Haskell. This is my daughter. She's three days old."

"Kira, stop," Garner said.

"Here are four things that happened," I said. "Please listen to all four."

Lacey tried to lower the phone.

Greg put out his hand, palm down, and said very quietly, "Let her finish."

Lacey held the phone where it was, because the number had gone up to forty.

"One," I said. "This house is mine. The lease has my name on it and nobody else's. Two. While I was in the hospital with a newborn, my husband changed the locks."

"Mar," Lacey whispered.

"Three. The woman holding this phone is standing in my robe and drinking from my mug."

"Four," I said. "On Monday night my husband had to choose between me in labor and her hairdo. I have it on video."

"I did not choose," Garner said.

The number said eighty-one.

The comments had started to scroll.

*wait what*

*is this real*

*he picked a HAIRDO??*

Lacey's face was working.

"She's not well," she said. "I'm going to end this now."

"Don't," I said. "I have the video."

I took my own phone out of the carrier pocket.

I had set up the doorbell camera the day we moved in, with my email, on my account.

Garner had never opened the app once.

I pressed the clip from Monday night and turned the screen toward Lacey's camera.

The picture was grainy and green.

It showed our front door standing open and Garner in the doorway in his boxers with my gray bag in his hand.
