Chapter 16: Six Weeks Late

Hannah's POV

Preston told me about the assistant in four sentences, standing in the kitchen doorway.

Then he asked me to let him give Poppy her party.

"She turned three six weeks ago," he said. "I wasn't there. I would like to stand in a room where I'm late and be allowed to stay."

I said yes before I had finished deciding.

It was the smallest party I had ever seen him plan.

No band, no planner, no photographer.

His security chief stood at the gate with a basket and took every guest's phone and gave it back with a paper tag, and Jack was the first to hand his over without a joke.

Preston had asked me one question that week.

"What does she love?"

I'd said popsicles, and the cat, and anybody who sat on the floor.

So the garden had a cooler of popsicles in six colors, and a borrowed cat that hated everyone, and a ring of cushions on the grass instead of chairs.

He had made the cake himself.

It leaned.

It was yellow, with a sugar sun on top, and one side had slid a little.

Poppy walked around it twice with her hands behind her back.

"It's falling," she said.

"It's tired," said Preston. "It's had a long week."

She considered that.

"Okay," she decided, and sat down in front of it.

Max sat beside her with a paper crown over one eye.

Jack sat on Max's other side with his eyes on the gate.
