Chapter 16: The Tablet
Tang Yu had cleared the whole bottom of the tablet by lamplight.
Then he had fallen asleep sitting up against the pillar, with the brush still in his fist.
Jinghan woke him with a cup of Su Ning's tea.
"I didn't read it," Tang Yu said before his eyes were open. "I wanted you to. It's a different script."
"It always is."
The four of them stood at the foot of the black stone with the pool hanging over their heads.
Su Ning had brought a lantern, a roll of paper and a flask of something that smelled of orange peel and strong liquor.
"If this is going to be a disaster," she said, "I would like to be drunk for it, and also not."
Luo put his hand at the small of Jinghan's back.
The lower half of the tablet was carved in a hand Jinghan had seen only in the oldest books in the Cloudpeak library.
The strokes were shallow and cramped.
He read it aloud, a line at a time, and Tang Yu wrote it down.
