Chapter 21: Two Hearts, One Vow

They went down the stair with Pei's voice at their backs.

"Open your door!" he called after them, quite gently. "I shall be here when it opens."

The water drew back from the twelve white steps for them, one at a time, as it had before.

Jinghan did not look at the ring of black spikes.

Luo's hand was in his, large and callused and not quite steady.

At the bottom, the round chamber lay under its roof of held-up water, pale and silent.

The statue stood in the middle with its cupped hands.

The girl's voice was very small.

"I am going to turn my face to the water," she said. "You will not feel me."

"I will come when the last word is said."

"You don't have to go," Luo said.

"I would like to."

The presence withdrew from Jinghan's chest.

The lotus kept burning, warm and steady.

The two men were alone.

Luo drew Ember Gate and held it across both hands.

"I'll go first," he said.

He knelt on the stone in front of Jinghan.

"Fang Jinghan. I give you my sword, which has never been drawn against you in anger."

He laid it across Jinghan's knees.

"I give you my seat, and my sect, and my name, whatever it's worth, as the Ember Demon and as a fool who loves you."

His voice cracked, and he kept going.

"I give you my back to guard, and I'll guard yours."

"I give you my body, as it is, for as long as there's any of it."
