Chapter 6: Hello, Nate

Nathaniel stopped moving.

I felt it before I saw it, because his hand had been resting at the small of my back, and every muscle in his arm went hard.

"Tiffany," he said.

It was the first time I had heard him say her name.

She stood, slowly, with her hand on the arm of the bench.

She looked smaller than she had in the church, with no makeup and her hair pulled back in a clip.

"Mrs. Aldridge cut off my card at nine this morning," she said. "The apartment on Spring Street is hers. I got a text from the landlord an hour ago, saying I have until Friday."

"That is not my concern," Nathaniel said.

"Preston won't answer his phone."

"That is not my concern either."

"Nate." Her voice cracked on his name. "I have nowhere to go."

I looked from her face to his.

He was perfectly still, and he was looking at a spot on the wall behind her.

I realized that whatever this was, I would not get it from him in front of the staff.

So I took one step forward.

"Miss Lund," I said. "Sit down."

She sat, startled.

"I'm going to say this once, and I'm going to be fair, because you're pregnant and none of this is that baby's fault." I kept my voice even. "You rode in my wedding car yesterday. You sat in my pew. You knew whose bed you were in."

"I didn't want..."

"You came anyway. Both times."

Her eyes filled again.

"But Preston owes you a roof, not us," I said. "And Margaret owes you an explanation. I'll have Mr. Aldridge's assistant book you a hotel in town for four nights, so you have a door that locks. After that you can sit down with a lawyer and ask Preston for what you need."

"You'd do that?" Tiffany whispered.

"I'd do it for anyone who's pregnant and cut off." I looked at the housekeeper. "Would you call the car, please?"
