Chapter 5: One Question a Week

The elevator rose in silence.

Dominic stood in the far corner with his back to the glass wall.

He kept his hands in his pockets, and I stood as far from him as the car allowed.

The floor numbers climbed past thirty, then forty, then fifty.

"You told her to go to my father's house," I said.

"No."

"She told me you did."

"I told her your workshop." His eyes stayed on the numbers. "Not that house."

"Why not?"

"That would be a question."

The doors opened onto a corner office with a view of the river.

He walked to the window and did not turn around.

"Here are the terms," he said. "One true answer a week, to any question you ask. I won't lie, and I won't dodge."

"One a week?"

"It's what I can afford."

"That's a strange thing to say about the truth."

"I won't touch you, and you won't come to my house. If you need something from me, you ask here."

I stared at his back.

"I'm not agreeing to a rule I didn't write," I said.

"Then write one."

"Fine. You answer in full sentences, and you look at me when you do it."

He turned around.

For a moment neither of us spoke, and I saw the scar through his left eyebrow clearly for the first time in daylight.

"Ask," he said.

I had planned to ask a hundred things on the ride up, and my mouth chose the smallest one.

"Do you love her?"

He did not blink.

"Yes," Dominic said. "More than my own life."

I had thought I was ready for it.
