Chapter 5: The Fitting

My grandmother's bungalow in Cicero has a front porch with one good chair.

Bev was sitting in it when we pulled up on Monday, with a tape measure around her neck and a mouthful of pins.

She took them out one by one.

"Well," she said. "You're taller than he looked on the news."

"Gran, this is Heath."

"I know who he is." She looked him up and down. "You're the Corbin boy. The hotel."

"Yes, ma'am."

"You're the one who never called her back."

Heath stopped on the second step.

I felt it in my own stomach.

"Gran," I said.

"I'm saying it to his face, Adeline. At my age I've earned the right to say things to people's faces."

Heath's mouth opened.

Then it closed again.

"Yes, ma'am," he said quietly. "That's fair."

Bev nodded, apparently satisfied, and held the screen door open for him.

"Wipe your feet. There's pie."

The dress was laid across the dining table.

It was ivory silk, with covered buttons from collar to waist and a lace yoke that had belonged to Bev's own mother.

She had worn it in 1971 and had let it out in three places on Saturday night, while I lay awake in Heath's third bedroom, thirty floors above Lake Michigan.

I changed in the back bedroom and held the sides closed over my ribs.

"I can't reach the top buttons," I called.

"Heath," Bev called back. "Go help her, my hands are shot."

"Gran, no."

"He's marrying you in five days. He can manage a zipper."

There was no zipper, only the buttons, forty of them, but nobody corrected her.
