Chapter 8: The Aisle
By four o'clock on Saturday, a hundred and sixty-two people were sitting in the Lakeshore ballroom, waiting for the wrong man.
I watched them through a crack in the side door.
On Tuesday I had posted the new address in the guest chat, and Tucker's mother had answered with a thumbs-up.
She sat at the front on the groom's side, in a pale suit, with her husband's hand on her knee.
Nobody there knew yet that the groom had changed.
"Chin up," Bev said, at my elbow.
She wore her navy dress and her good shoes, and she had a clean handkerchief tucked in her sleeve.
"You look like my mother in 1971," she said. "She was terrified too."
"I'm not terrified."
"Of course you aren't, dear." She took my arm. "Walk."
The doors opened.
The first chord of the string quartet died before it finished.
A hundred and sixty-two heads turned.
I saw it travel down the rows, a wave of faces that went from smiling to blank.
Heath stood at the end of the aisle in a black suit, with his hands loose at his sides.
Beside the front pew, in a tuxedo, with a white rose on his lapel, stood Tucker.
He had come to be married.
He looked back at me, and his smile was already shaping itself into sorrow.
"Addie," he said, to the whole room. "Baby. Everyone, please. She isn't herself."
Nobody spoke.
I walked another three steps on Bev's arm.
"This is a very hard time for us," Tucker went on, louder. "My fiancée has been under a lot of strain, and she's been, well, led astray. I'll take her home after."
