Chapter 18: Tuesdays
By the time Soren turned around, the white car was gone from the lot.
I did not tell him it had been there.
I told myself that was because I had not decided yet what it meant.
On Tuesday he came to my door at four o'clock exactly, in jeans and a gray sweater, with a paper bag in his hand.
In February I had left the gray house in Grand Marais for a flat on the second floor of an old brick building in Duluth, two streets up from the harbor, near the hospital and Elin.
It had a bay window and a radiator that clanked.
Elin lived downstairs, and she had been sitting on the stairs since three-thirty with a book, pretending to read.
"I come in peace," Soren said to her.
"You come in a sweater," Elin said. "I'm reserving judgment."
"What's in the bag?" I asked.
"Burp cloths. The woman at the shop said I needed twelve."
"You bought twelve burp cloths."
"She said twelve."
"Soren, you've run a shipping company for two years. Did you not wonder?"
"I wondered," he said. "I bought them anyway."
Elin made a sound into her book that was almost a laugh.
I let him in and pointed to the kitchen chair.
Wren was in her bouncer by the window with a rattle she was ignoring.
I put a bottle of my pumped milk in his hand and a towel over his shoulder.
"You're feeding her," I said. "I'll be at the stove. If she cries, you don't hand her to me. You try three things first."
"What three things?"
"You'll find out."
He sat down on the very edge of the chair.
