Chapter 22: The Board

Nobody offered Astrid a chair, and she took the one beside Margit anyway.

The board chair stayed on his feet with the folio against his chest.

"Mrs. Lund," he said to me, because that was the name on his list. "I'll be brief. The foundation has received a letter from Ms. Maddox's counsel. It says your husband's recent inquiries rest on material you supplied."

"I supplied nothing," I said. "He found it himself."

"Then you won't object to the board hearing both of you."

"When?"

"Tomorrow, at ten," Astrid said gently. "At the annex. Please come, Linnea. I'd hate for it to be decided without you."

"I'll bring Soren."

"I'd expect nothing less."

She smiled at Wren, who stared back at her without blinking.

Then she followed the chair out, and I heard her heels click all the way down the hall.

The boardroom at the annex had a long table of pale wood, and fourteen people sat around it.

They were donors and lawyers and one retired judge, in good jackets, with water glasses in front of them.

Astrid sat at the far end in a blue dress, with a thin blue folder in front of her.

Soren sat beside me.

Margit had taken the seat at the head, and she did not look at either of us.

Wren was with Elin in the hall, because I had refused to bring her into that room.

The chair opened with a minute of procedure that I did not hear.

Then Astrid stood.

She spoke softly, and she began by thanking everyone for their patience.

"I've known Soren since I was nine," she said. "I have loved this family for twenty-three years. And I want to say first that I do not blame Mrs. Lund. She has been through a trauma. She lost the use of her hand, and her marriage, and the sense of her own worth."
