Chapter 7: The Segment

On Monday morning, Astrid Maddox was on the television in the clinic waiting room.

Someone had turned it up for the morning show, and four of us in the room looked at it at once.

She sat on a pale yellow sofa with her hands in her lap, and both hands were wrapped in white gauze.

She wore a soft cream sweater.

She had never looked so lovely.

"It was the worst night of my life," she told the host. "The smoke came so fast. I could hear people screaming, and my leg gave out, and I thought I was going to die on that floor."

"And Soren Lund carried you out," the host said.

"He did." Astrid pressed her bandaged fingers to her mouth. "I owe him my life, again. It's strange. He saved me this time, and I saved him once, a long time ago."

The host's eyes went shiny.

"The two of you have a very special bond."

"We do. We're like family."

"And his wife?" the host asked, softer. "We understand she was injured as well."

Astrid hesitated.

It was a short, careful hesitation.

"Linnea was very frightened," she said. "She's a sensitive person, and an artist. After a trauma like that people do unexpected things. Soren is beside himself. He hasn't stopped trying to reach her."

"Do you know where she is?"

"No. We only hope she's safe and with people who care about her."

I realized I was holding the arm of the chair.
