Chapter 14: Six Months
Stevie's POV
Davis packed a duffel bag at the kitchen table while Posy ate peas one at a time.
"Where are you going, Daddy?" she asked.
"The loft over the boat shed. For a bit."
"Is it because of the man with the coat?"
"It's because the shed has a very good view," Davis said, "and I'm tired of looking at your drawings of the dog."
"We don't have a dog."
"That's why they upset me."
Posy giggled and ate a pea.
He zipped the bag, kissed the top of her head, and followed me to the porch.
The light was going out of the harbor.
"You don't have to do this," I said.
"I do, Steph. For a few weeks I'd like to be the friend who gave you room, and not the husband who didn't know he wasn't one." He pushed his glasses up. "I'll be here for breakfast every morning. Posy's mine, and she's yours, and neither of those things is in a statute."
"Davis."
"Go and work out what you want. Then tell me, and I'll draw up whatever it takes."
He went down the steps with the duffel over his shoulder.
I stood there until I couldn't see the back of his cardigan.
The bakery was shut by seven.
Declan was waiting at the long table when I came in through the back, and he stood up the moment I did.
He did not start the story over.
I laid my hands flat on the steel, and I couldn't feel my fingers.
"She read six," I said. "And the rest she burned at Christmas."
"Yes."
"For two years I thought you'd stopped."
"I never stopped."
"I know that now." I looked up. "I'm not leaving this town, Declan. I'm not leaving my bakery or Posy. If you want me, you want me here, on my terms."
"Tell me the terms."
"Six months. I decide at the end, and I don't file anything until then."
