Chapter 14: The Foundation Gala

The Hotel Belvedere ballroom held four hundred people and a crystal chandelier the size of a car.

I walked in at eight-forty on Lachlan's arm.

I wore the black dress with the low back, and my wrists were bare, and every mark on them showed.

The room had been laughing.

It stopped.

I watched the faces turn, one table at a time.

A woman in diamonds put her hand over her mouth.

A man I'd known since I was nine looked at his shoes.

At the far end, on a low stage under the chandelier, my father stood at a podium with a glass of champagne.

He saw me.

I watched the color leave his face in a slow sheet.

Cordelia stood beside him in cream silk, glowing, with Preston at her elbow and a ring on her finger the size of a grape.

"Good evening," I said.

My voice carried.

I had not known it would.

Lachlan squeezed my hand once, and let it go, and stepped back.

I walked down the long center aisle alone.

Nobody moved.

I climbed the three steps to the stage and took the microphone off the stand beside my father.
