Chapter 17: The Nightmare Hour

I woke at three in the morning with my hands tied.

They weren't.

I knew they weren't, even as I fought the sheets, even as a sound tore out of me that I did not recognize.

The lamp snapped on and Lachlan's arms were around me.

"Mina. Mina. You're home. You're on Chase Street, in the penthouse. You're in my bed."

"The chute," I said. "I couldn't fit."

"You fit."

"I couldn't."

"You did. You got out. Look at me."

I looked.

His hair was flat on one side and his eyes were enormous with sleep and fear.

He was holding my face with both hands.

My teeth were chattering.

"Breathe with me," he said. "In. Hold. Out."

I breathed.

It took a long time.

When the shaking finally stopped I lay against his chest with my heart still racing.

He stroked my back in long slow lines.

"It was the first dream in a week," I said.

"It might not be the last."

"I know."

"I'll be here for all of them."

I turned my head and looked up at him.

"I don't want to talk about it," I said. "I want to feel something that isn't that."

"Tell me what."

"You. Slowly. Inside me."

He searched my face.

Whatever he found there, he nodded.

"On your side," he said. "Back to me."

I turned and curled up on my left side.

He fitted himself against my back, his chest warm along my spine and his knees tucked behind mine.
