Chapter 24: The Second Wedding
I opened my mother's letter at noon on Saturday, sitting on the tailgate of a truck in the middle of an empty lot.
The envelope had gone soft as cloth.
My name was on it in her small neat capitals, and under it she had written "Not before you have a table of your own."
I slid my thumb under the flap.
The page inside was a single sheet of tracing paper, covered on both sides.
"Briony,
"If you're reading this, your father finally went up to the attic, and you have a drafting table somewhere with your name on it.
"I drew these porches for a house we never got to build.
"Build one for somebody.
"If you marry, don't let anyone walk you to him.
"Walk yourself.
"I did, in my boots, and I was twenty minutes late, and your father waited anyway.
"That's how I knew.
"Your hems will be crooked.
"I love that too.
"Mom."
I read it twice.
Then I folded it along its old creases and put it in the pocket of my green dress.
I had hemmed the dress myself on Thursday night, and the hem was crooked by a quarter inch.
I left it that way.
