Chapter 20: The Gate

I didn't think.

I threw myself flat on the ice and put my light through the hole.

He was right there. Six feet down.

The current had slammed him against the face of the gate, chest-deep, with the whole river pressing him into the steel.

He had one arm hooked through the crane's chain where it ran down to the lifting lugs.

The water was pulling at the rest of him, trying to drag him sideways toward the crest and over.

"Nolan!"

His face came up white in my light.

"Don't," he shouted. "Don't you come down here."

I was already untying the knot at my waist.

"Hold her!" I yelled back at the bank. "Hold the line!"

I looped the rope around the rail twice, wrapped the loose end around my wrist, and went down the chain.

The cold took my breath clean out of my body.

October had been a slap. This was a fist.

I came down beside him with my back against the gate.

"I told you not to," he said through his teeth.

"I'm the town engineer. You don't get to tell me anything."

My hands didn't work. I made them work.
