Chapter 24: Eight Days
I handed Nolan back his phone.
"They waited till the last week," Nolan said. "So they're scared of you. What do we do?"
"We knock on doors," I said. "Every door in town. Before they decide I'm the bitter ex-wife again."
He looked at me for a while.
"You're very bossy in the morning."
"Get up and burn me a pancake."
He burned three.
By nine we had a map of Alder Falls on Opal's kitchen table, cut into eight pieces with her good scissors.
It snowed the whole week.
On Tuesday I stood on a porch on Pine Street while a man in a bathrobe told me I'd ruined his life.
"I didn't do anything to you," I said.
"Your grandmother put that stop sign in. In 2011."
"I was in high school."
"She stamped it."
"She stamps everything."
He took my flyer anyway.
Then he looked at the price on it, a hundred and forty-eight dollars, and put a BUY IT BACK sign in his own snowbank while I watched.
His neighbor across the street, the one who'd fought him over the stop sign for six years, came out and put up a sign too.
