Chapter 4: The Yellow Crane

I closed my eyes and heard her again.

"A big yellow crane," I said. "With a red light on the very top."

Gabe's head came up.

"Yellow," he said. "Not orange, not white."

"That's what she said."

"With a red light."

"A tower crane," Gabe said. "She's looking at a tower crane."

The young officer opened his mouth.

"There's only one in this part of town," Gabe said over him. "Saguaro Medical Tower, three miles east on Mesa. We haul the steel there."

"Why would a club park cars at a construction site?" the officer asked.

"D is the staging pad at the tower. The club rents it from the contractor for events."

"Gabe."

"Get in."

I was in the truck before he finished the sentence.

The officer shouted something about waiting for a unit with a plate.

"Follow us!" I yelled out the window, and I did not look back.

The pickup hit the gravel road doing seventy.

The dashboard thermometer said 118.

My phone rang on my knee.

BRODIE.

I almost threw it out the window.

I answered it on speaker.

"What did you tell the manager?" Brodie said.

"I told her my child is in a car."

"She came to the table, Theresa. In front of everyone, she said she was going to call the sheriff on me."

"Good."

"I'm trying to find the damn valet!"

"Tell me which lot he used."

"I don't know! I handed the keys over!"
