Chapter 19: Ellery's Recital
The showcase was in the school cafeteria, with a paper banner and sixty folding chairs.
Ellery had put a sticker on two of them in the front row.
One said MOM.
One said DAD.
Julius stood at the end of the row for a full minute, looking at the sticker.
"Sit," I whispered. "People are watching."
"She wrote it with a capital."
"She writes everything with a capital."
He sat.
His knee was bouncing, and I put my hand on it, and it stopped.
Behind us, parents settled in with phones raised and tissue packets ready.
A father I had seen at pickup leaned forward and clapped Julius on the shoulder.
"You're the guy from the symphony," he said. "My daughter says you wave a stick."
"It's a baton."
"She says it's a stick."
"It's mostly a stick," Julius admitted.
The teacher with the glasses on the chain tapped the microphone, and the program began.
A boy recited a poem about a worm.
