Chapter 16: A Few Days
I did not let him into the booth.
I walked down the hall alone and pulled the booth door shut behind me, so Calvin stayed on the other side of the glass.
Nolan stood under the one yellow bulb with his hands in his coat pockets.
He looked tired, and there was a day of beard on his jaw.
"Kirsten."
"You're not a sponsor here," I said. "You're a man in a hallway."
"I heard the show."
"Then you heard a woman tell a stranger what a formality is."
His face closed.
"That was a low thing to put on the air."
"I didn't put it there. She called in." I leaned against the wall. "You've heard that word before, haven't you?"
"I came to ask you to stop."
"Stop what?"
"This." He took one hand out of his pocket and gestured at the stairs, the posters, the tape on the floor. "You're on a station nobody listens to, with a man I don't know, saying Joan's name to strangers. Let me fix it. I can reverse the sponsorship tomorrow. You'd have your show back on the old station by Monday."
"On what terms?"
"You come home."
I almost laughed.
"Nolan. Three weeks ago I stood in your kitchen and gave you terms."
"I remember."
"Say them."
He shifted.
"Polly leaves my house in a few days."
"In a few days," I said. "That was weeks ago, Nolan. A few days, and she's still sleeping in your house."
"She has nowhere to go."
"She has a brother with a cabin and a perfectly good heart."
"Her brother is dead."
He said it quietly, and he would not look at me.
