Chapter 17: The Hearing at Work

The hearing was in the same glass conference room where Dean had told the truth about himself.

This time there were eleven chairs, and every one of them was full.

I sat at the end of the table with my cane against my knee. Faye sat behind me, because HR had said I could bring one person and had not specified how close.

Dean sat beside me.

Brynn sat across the table, in a cream blouse, with a lawyer's folder in front of her.

The woman in the navy suit opened the meeting.

"Ms. Keating has filed a complaint," she said. "She alleges that Mrs. Hollander arranged a public attack on her at the launch party. We are going to hear from her first, and then from anyone who wishes to speak."

Brynn spoke for six minutes.

She was good. She said she had been Dean's friend and his colleague, and that his wife had been jealous for months. She said the reading at the party had been planned to destroy her. She said she had fainted from real distress.

She cried at the right moments.

When she finished, the room was quiet.

"Thank you," the woman in the suit said. "Who would like to speak?"

Nobody moved for a moment.

Then a young man at the foot of the table raised his hand. I had seen him at the party, standing against the wall with a plate he never ate from.

"I'm on the platform team," he said. "I'm not here to pile on."

"Go ahead."

"In March I was supposed to hand Dean a fix for a bug, and I called him three times. Brynn answered his phone every time and said he was in a meeting."
