Chapter 24: The Sunday Ride
The Sunday slow-roll met at eight, in the lot behind Hank's shop.
It was cold and clear, and the mountains looked close enough to touch.
I rolled up on my rebuilt bike with the bell on the handlebar.
Dean rolled up beside me on his.
Nobody said a word about it.
The schoolteacher raised her coffee cup in our direction, and the man in the Hawaiian shirt winked.
The teenager looked up from his phone, nodded once at Dean, and went back to his phone.
Hank stood on an overturned crate with his clipboard.
"Fourteen riders," he said. "Ten miles, flat loop, coffee at the end. If your legs hurt, say so. If your friend's legs hurt, wait. Nobody gets left behind."
He looked straight at Dean when he said the last part.
Dean nodded.
We rolled out at a quarter past.
For the first mile I rode at the back of the group, and he rode beside me.
Not ahead, and not behind. Just beside.
His wheel was a foot from mine the whole way.
"You can go on up front," I said. "You don't have to ride at the back."
"I know."
"You'll get bored."
"I might," Dean said. "I'll tell you if I do."
At mile three, the road tipped uphill.
I shifted down.
He shifted down with me, a half second later, and I heard the chain click.
"You don't have to copy me," I said.
"I'm not copying you. I'm finding out what pace you're doing."
"It's slow."
"It's perfect."
I glanced over.
He was looking at the road, not at me. His face was calm.
