Chapter 10: Second Line
By ten on Mardi Gras morning, Magazine Street had turned into one long loud party.
A brass band marched down the middle of it, trumpets and trombones and a sousaphone, and behind the band came a second line.
Hundreds of people danced behind it with umbrellas and handkerchiefs and beads.
I wore the gold mask again, and a green dress I had not worn in eight years.
Tommy walked on my left in a black mask and a dark suit.
Vince walked on my right in a mask covered in purple feathers, which he had not let me talk him out of.
"That is the loudest mask I have ever seen," I told him.
"Thank you, sweetheart. That's the plan."
Somewhere a drum hit the beat, and the whole crowd answered it with their feet.
I had not danced in a second line since I was twenty-three years old.
