Chapter 15: The Aunts' Kitchen
Celie's POV
At eight on Saturday morning I bought a bed.
I did it standing in my kitchen with a coffee in one hand, and I paid extra for delivery by evening.
It was solid oak, pale and plain, and no grandmother had ever slept in it.
Then I let the brothers drive me to Metairie.
The oldest aunt lived in a brick house with a carport and a plaster saint in the yard.
The brothers' mother had been the youngest of five sisters, and all of them were alive.
The smell reached us in the carport, anise and fig and hot bread.
"Wait here," Vince said, and stopped on the back steps.
"You're not coming in?"
"Zia says men on the porch till she calls. She isn't joking. She once threw a ladle at Tommy."
"It was a spoon," Tommy said. "And I was nine."
His hand was on the small of my back.
It had been there since the car, a big warm weight through my sweater, steady and patient.
I felt it in my knees.
I turned and looked up at him, and for one second neither of us said anything.
