Chapter 18: The Altar Supper
On the nineteenth of March the parish hall smelled of lemons and fried fish and candle wax.
The altar filled the whole end wall, three tiers high.
It was built of bread, braided and twisted into crosses and staffs and lilies.
Between the loaves stood bowls of fava beans and platters of fig cookies.
At the top stood San Giuseppe in plaster, with a child on his arm and a lily in his hand.
Three hundred people sat at long tables below him.
I walked in wearing green.
It was the color of the dress I had bought for no one, on a Tuesday, in a shop on Magazine Street.
Tommy was on my left and Vince on my right.
Tommy's palm closed over mine in the doorway, and he did not let go until we reached the table.
The room went silent, and then it started up again, low and hungry.
Everyone looked at the empty chair they had set for me at Santo's right hand.
I walked past it and sat in the middle of the family, between the brothers.
On the far side of the aisle, the aunts sat in a row.
All twelve of them were there, in their good church dresses.
