Chapter 7: The Chair Between
Celie's POV
Santo's house in Lakeview had a table that sat forty, and every chair was full by noon.
I walked in between the brothers.
Forty people stopped talking and watched us come.
The aunts, the cousins, the cousins' husbands, the children under the table, and every one of them had seen the picture.
Nobody said a word to me.
Santo sat at the head, small and white-haired, with a gold ring on each hand.
The widow's chair stood at his right, with Carlo's empty chair next to it.
It had stood that way for a year, and every Sunday I had sat in it and been looked at.
I walked past it.
I took the two empty seats halfway down the table, between Tommy and Vince, and I sat.
The silence got thicker.
Vince pulled my chair in for me.
"Don't scrape the floor, angel," he murmured. "Zio hates it."
