Wolfless Omega, Claimed by Prince Lycan King novel · Chapter 4 of 24

Chapter 4: The Council Table

The Council dined with the King every Friday, and that Friday the whole Court came to watch.

Oona dressed me for it.

She pulled a green silk dress out of her own closet and held it against me.

"Too long. Good. Wear it with flats and look like you don't care."

"I do care."

"That's why you wear flats."

The dining hall had a ceiling painted with wolves running under a gold moon.

Sixty people stood up when the King came in.

Then they saw who was on his arm, and some of them forgot to sit back down.

He pulled out the chair on his right for me.

The room watched me sit in it.

Down the table, my father was already in his place among the elders.

Lyla sat beside him in white again.

She lifted her glass to me.

"Hes. You look so grown up."

I lifted mine back.

The first course came. Something with beets.

My father let the room get through half of it before he set down his fork.

"Majesty," he said. "Before we go on. A family matter."

Evander kept cutting his beets.

"Go on."

"My daughter is not well." My father's voice was warm and grieved, the voice he used at funerals. "She's had a hard year. Her engagement ended. Last night she said things in front of the pack that she didn't mean."

Heads turned toward me.

"A Moreland omega belongs with the Moreland pack. I'd like to take her home tomorrow. Quietly. Before she embarrasses the Crown."

The elder from the Gulf made a sympathetic noise.

"Poor thing," she said. "No wolf at her age. It does things to the mind."

I put my knife down.

"I meant every word," I said. "And I'm not a Moreland omega. I'm a rogue. You heard me in the hall, Dad. So did two hundred people."

"You're upset, sweetheart."

"I was upset for eight years. Last night I was finished."
