Chapter 6: The Photo

"Don't go down there," Oona said. "I mean it. Stay in bed. I'll bring you waffles and we'll plan a murder."

"What's down there?"

"The Saturday audience. Every wolf at Court in one room, pretending to care about a boundary dispute." She looked at her phone and winced. "And looking at that."

I picked the green dress up off the chair.

Oona's eyebrows went up.

"Oh," she said. "Oh, that's evil. Let me do your hair."

The great hall was full when I walked in.

Petitioners stood in a line down the middle. Courtiers lined the walls. The Council sat on a raised step to one side.

Evander was on the throne at the end, listening to two Alphas argue about a creek.

He saw me in the doorway, and stopped listening.

So did everyone else.

The same green silk. The same flat shoes. My hair down, the way it had been in the photo.

I walked up the side of the hall past every phone in the room.

Lyla was standing near the Council step beside our father, in pale pink this time, her hands folded.

When she saw me she put on a face of terrible sisterly pain.

"Oh, Hes," she said, loud enough to carry. "I'm so sorry. I don't know who would do that to you."

"You would," I said. "You did."

A ripple ran down the wall.

Lyla pressed a hand to her chest. "I only shared it because I was worried. People needed to know what she's doing up there."

"I know exactly what I was doing up there," I said. "I was in the King's closet with the King. I'm wearing the dress, in case anyone missed it."

Someone near the door laughed out loud.

I turned to Lyla.

"What I want to know is how you got up the tower stair."

Her mouth opened.

"There's a guard on it all night," I said. "He let me up because the King told him Miss Moreland goes where she likes."
