Wolfless Omega, Claimed by Prince Lycan King novel · Chapter 7 of 24

Chapter 7: Witness

The northern Alpha was standing by the great hearth when I came in, warming his hands.

He was older than my father by twenty years. White hair, a wool coat to his ankles, and a long yellow face.

He looked at me.

"Thinner than the picture," he said to my father. "But she'll do."

My father stood beside him with his chest out.

The Council had come back to their step. Half the Court had come back to the walls.

Nobody wanted to miss the second show of the day.

"Hesper," my father said. "This is your husband."

"No, he isn't."

"The papers are signed. A Moreland omega goes where her Alpha sends her."

"I'm not a Moreland omega."

"You are." He turned to the Council and opened his hands, reasonable as a priest. "The law is clear. A renunciation must be spoken before the Alpha and a witness of rank, in the same room. My hall was full of my own wolves. There was no witness of rank."

The North stroked his chin.

"That is the law," he admitted.

"The King was on the steps," Oona said from behind me. "He heard every word."

"On the steps," my father said. "Not in the room. My daughter knows the old forms. She was raised on them."

I had been.

I'd learned every one at my mother's knee, before she died and nobody taught me anything else.

The side door opened.

Evander came in wearing a guard's long black coat over nothing, his hair full of pine needles, snow still melting on his shoulders.

He'd shifted back somewhere in the trees and borrowed the first thing he could find.

The whole Court pretended not to notice.

He started toward the dais.

I put my hand up.

He stopped. I watched him stop. It cost him something.

"Majesty," I said. "Would you stand as my witness?"
