Chapter 17: The Third Mast
On the morning of the Midsummer Regatta, the sun came up over Saltmere harbor clean and bright.
Every ship in the roads wore flags.
The royal barge lay at the end of the long stone pier, gilded to the waterline.
The King sat in a canopied chair on its afterdeck, an old man in a plain blue coat, with a crown on a cushion beside him.
Beside the King sat the Queen, tall and quiet.
Around them, packed to the rails and the rooftops and the rigging, was every soul in the port.
Perrine stood on the pier with her hair up and a blue ribbon on her left wrist.
Next to her stood Aurelie, in white, with a wreath of white flowers in her hair and a smile that made strangers weep.
"You're so pale," Aurelie murmured. "Take my hand."
Perrine took it.
It was warm.
On the Resolute, moored alongside the pier, a Navy brig with her yards squared and her ensign hanging, there were forty sailors at the rail.
At the top of the third mast, in the fighting top, one figure sat in a tangle of rigging with his knees drawn up.
He wore a red cap.
